Why C:\inetpub Appeared and How to Check Windows Update

That empty inetpub folder is part of a Windows security fix, so leave it in place and use these steps to confirm that updates still install.

Why did the inetpub folder suddenly appear?

If you opened your C: drive and found a folder named inetpub, you did not accidentally install a strange program. Windows created it during the April 2025 security updates. On Windows 11 version 24H2, one of the updates involved was KB5055523. The folder was also reported on updated Windows 10 computers.

The name looks technical because inetpub normally belongs to Internet Information Services, or IIS. IIS is an optional Windows feature that can turn a PC into a web server. Most home computers do not use it. In this case, Windows may create the folder even while IIS remains turned off.

The folder is connected to the fix for security issue CVE-2025-21204. In plain English, the flaw could let someone with local access misdirect Windows while it handles certain linked folders. The inetpub folder helps Windows apply the intended protection.

An empty folder that uses zero bytes can look pointless, but do not delete it. Do not rename it, move it, change its owner, or place your own files inside it. You also do not need to open it. Its presence does not mean your computer is hosting a website or has been hacked.

Check that the folder is where it belongs

These instructions assume Windows is installed on the C: drive, which is true for most PCs. Looking at the folder is safe. You will not be changing anything.

1. Click the yellow folder icon on the taskbar to open File Explorer.
2. Click This PC in the left side of File Explorer.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
4. Look for the folder named inetpub.
5. Leave the inetpub folder in its current location.

Make sure Windows Update is still working

The best practical check is to ask Windows Update to look for updates and then review its history. A recently installed cumulative or security update is a reassuring sign. A cumulative update is Microsoft’s regular package containing the newest fixes plus earlier fixes.

The following steps use Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings, choose Update & Security, and then choose Windows Update. Button wording can vary slightly between Windows versions.

1. Press the Windows key and the letter I together to open Settings.
2. Click Windows Update in the left side of Settings.
3. Click Check for updates.
4. Click Download & install if Windows offers an update.
5. Restart the computer if Windows asks you to restart.
6. Open Windows Update again after the restart.
7. Confirm that Windows says You’re up to date or shows no remaining security updates.
8. Click Update history.
9. Look under Quality Updates for a recent entry marked as successfully installed.

What to do if you already deleted inetpub

First, take a breath. Deleting the folder does not mean you ruined Windows. It does mean you should let Windows restore the security-related setup rather than creating an ordinary folder yourself. A folder made by hand may not receive the same ownership and security settings.

Start by completing the Windows Update check above. Install every available cumulative or security update, and restart when requested. A newer cumulative update may recreate inetpub. Check the C: drive again afterward.

If the PC is fully updated but the folder is still missing, published guidance describes enabling IIS as a way to recreate it. This turns on an optional web-server feature, so use it only when the update route has not restored the folder. The Windows Features window may look crowded, but you only need to touch the named item below.

1. Press the Windows key to open Start.
2. Type Windows features into the Start search box.
3. Click Turn Windows features on or off.
4. Select the checkbox beside Internet Information Services.
5. Click OK.
6. Restart the PC if Windows requests a restart.
7. Open the C: drive in File Explorer to confirm that inetpub has returned.

A few things you do not need to do

You do not need to put website files in inetpub. You do not need to give yourself permission to edit it. You also do not need to keep opening it to check whether anything has changed.

If Windows Update repeatedly displays an error code, write that code down exactly. That is a separate clue worth troubleshooting. Simply seeing an empty C:\inetpub folder, however, is expected after the relevant security update and is not an error by itself.

Bottom line

The C:\inetpub folder is an intentional part of a Windows security fix, even when it is empty and IIS is off. Leave it alone, install current Windows updates, and check Update history for a successful recent quality update.
